Shipping and customs when importing from Japan

Carrier options, timelines, insurance and how duty is assessed on goods leaving Japan.

Carrier options out of Japan

DHL Express and FedEx International Priority reach most of North America and Europe in two to five business days with full door-to-door tracking, and both clear customs on your behalf. EMS, the postal service, typically takes five to ten days and costs less.

Surface freight exists and is cheap, but transit runs to several weeks and tracking is limited. It is rarely right for anything valuable.

Insurance

Insure to full replacement value, not declared value. The two are often set differently, and the gap only becomes visible when something goes wrong.

Duty and import tax

Duty is assessed by your own country, on the declared value, and it is the buyer’s responsibility. Rates vary by category, and watches, jewelry and leather goods commonly attract higher rates than apparel.

Ask for the customs declaration to be accurate. Under-declaring moves the risk onto you: if the parcel is inspected the item can be held, and insurance claims are settled against the declared figure.

Packaging

For anything fragile or high-value, ask what the packaging actually is before it ships. Hard cases for watches, double-boxing for sneakers and rigid protection for collectibles are the baseline.
